Amblyopia β€” commonly called "lazy eye" β€” is one of the most frequent causes of reduced vision in children, and one of the most important to catch early. The reassuring part is that, treated in time, it can very often be corrected. Missed, it can leave a child with permanently weak vision in one eye for life. Timing makes all the difference.

What amblyopia really is

Seeing is not done by the eyes alone β€” it is done by the eyes and the brain working together. In early childhood, the brain learns to process clear images from each eye. If, during these formative years, one eye sends a blurred or confusing image, the brain begins to ignore that eye and relies on the stronger one. The weaker eye then fails to develop normal vision, even though the eye itself may be perfectly healthy. This is amblyopia.

What causes it?

  • A large difference in spectacle power between the two eyes, so one eye is always out of focus.
  • A squint (strabismus), where the eyes are not aligned and point in different directions.
  • Something blocking clear vision in one eye during childhood, such as a droopy eyelid or a childhood cataract.

Signs parents can watch for

  • One eye that seems to drift, turn in or turn out.
  • Tilting the head or closing one eye to see better.
  • Sitting very close to the television, or holding books and phones close.
  • Complaining of difficulty seeing the school board, or poor reading progress.

Because young children rarely realise or complain that one eye sees poorly, amblyopia is often silent. Many cases are found only during a routine eye check β€” which is exactly why a check before school age is so valuable.

How it is treated

Treatment first corrects the underlying cause β€” for example, the right spectacles for a refractive difference, or treating a squint. The weaker eye is then encouraged to work harder, often by patching the stronger eye for part of the day, or using special eye drops in the stronger eye. Modern vision therapy β€” structured, guided exercises β€” can further strengthen the eye–brain connection. The developing brain responds best in the early years, so starting early gives the best results.
